4 simple & effective home remedies to purify water

844 million people of the world’s population lack access to clean water but need a source for it. This means every 1 in 9 people lacks access to safe water. However, the ones who already have access to the water are consuming arsenic, excessive fluoride contaminated drinking water that is leading them to a health disaster. It’s getting consumed as a slow-death poison that is as sinister as it sounds & causing—cancer, discoloration of teeth manifesting as skin lesions, damage to neurological systems, skeletal deformities and many abominable health issues.

Meanwhile, the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation has also reported that at least 1.8 billion people worldwide are estimated to use a source of drinking water that is faecally contaminated. Furthermore, 1000 children die every-day because of diarrhoeal issues.

The fact is that—

Each person on Earth requires at least 20 to 50 liters of clean, safe water a day for drinking, cooking, and simply keeping themselves clean. Freshwater sustains our life longer and is vital for our health. As UNICEF says—

Universal access to safe drinking water is a fundamental need and human right

We should understand that Water accounts for 70% of our body. And a healthy water intake can help us in many ways.

  1. One can think better– A fully hydrated brain actually works faster.
  2. Strength increases– Our muscles work even better when our body is fully hydrated.
  3. Immunity – even our immune system can function better.
  4. Flush junk out of our system– A fully hydrated body is better at getting rid of the things it doesn’t need.

Hence, it’s a fundamental need. Getting hydrated with clean and purified water is vital nowadays. Otherwise, the same water can cause as much harm to your body as good.

Toxic water definitely poses serious health risks to you and to your family. In order to get rid of it, there are some home-remedies they’ve been running from the ages. Some of them are stated below, might’ve one of these you’ve applied already.

METHOD-1

PARTICULATES REMOVAL

Strain out the contaminants

water filtering

Water that’s contaminated with large particles like sand granules, pebbles, insects & plant matter, can be strained out with muslin, cheesecloth, a clean dish towel, or even a clean cotton shirt. This method only takes care of large mostly visible particles, not the pathogens or other bacterial particulates.

Sedimentation

When we don’t have access to anything to purify the water. One can filter it by removing large particulate from water by letting it settle for one to two hours. To remove lightweight particles, skim them from the surface of the water.

To remove heavier sediment, gently and slowly pour the water into a clean bowl or jar. Stop pouring before you get to the bottom, as this will leave the heavier sediment behind in the original container.

METHOD-2

CHEMICAL TREATMENT OF WATER

Water purification and disinfection tablets

disinfection tablets

By just filling the jar with the water & the tablets you can clear out the contaminants. These tablets are made of either chlorine dioxide or iodine and kill bacteria and viruses present in the water. One tablet generally treats 1 quart (1 L) of water. These tablets usually need around 30 minutes to four hours to work. Although it’s another method that one can carry in his bag while going for purifying the water. But, one should remember that it’s not at all suitable for pregnant women or people with shellfish allergies.

Use Small amounts of Bleach

bleach

For killing the bacteria & viruses bleach can be seen as one option too. To purify the water- Fill a pitcher or jug with water. Add four drops (1/16 teaspoon) of bleach per quart (liter) of water. Shake or stir the mixture & let the mixture sit for 30 minutes.

METHOD-3

FILTERING OUT THE CONTAMINANTS

Filter out pathogens with pine tree’s leaves

pine tree leaves

Plants have been counted among the most effective ways to cure human maladies. One is Pine tree. Believe it or not. They are effective at removing pathogens from water & get counted as the best to do it.

For filtering out the viruses and bacteria from the water, remove a small branch from a pine tree. Strip the bark from the stick and place the bare stick into a bucket. Slowly pour the water, letting it trickle onto the stick and into the bucket. And as the water will flow over the sap inside the stick, the sap will trap and collect pathogens in the water.

Clay Pot

clay pot

Clay is seen as one of the best carriers of water from the ages. And why wouldn’t be? It has served us the cold & clean water to quench our thirst during the dog-days of summer. But, they can trap bacteria, protozoa, and sediment. Because they can trap these contaminants, clay pots can be used to purify water, especially water contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

Just place the bottom of a clay pot on the top of a jar or bucket with a similarly sized opening. Then, Fill the clay pot with water. And allow the water to soak the pot and trickle through the clay, filling the jar below.

METHOD-4

KILL THE PATHOGENS WITH SUNSHINE OR HEAT

Boiling

boiling water

It’s the easiest method to carry forward while doing the purification of water. Take a vessel, fill it with water & put it on a heating source such as stove etc. Boil it around for 10 minutes. And let it sit for one minute normally but at higher altitudes for 3 minutes. Because, according to the Washington State Department of Health and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, you should bring the water to boil and keep it rolling for one minute to purify it.

Boiling the water alone isn’t effective at times. Especially when you’re inadvertently boiling it without the knowledge of pollutants such as arsenic or other additional pollutants. But, boiling the water with the inside of a cactus could remove additional pollutants, such as arsenic.

Solar Water Disinfection

water bottle in sunlight

A type of portable water purification method. When done properly, it’s a very effective method for killing pathogens in water. To purify the water—Fill a clear and smooth plastic bottle with water. Twist on the lid, and place the bottle on its side in direct sunlight for six hours to kill biologically-contaminated pollutants (parasites, bacteria, and viruses).

The method works because the plastic acts to trap heat from the sun inside the bottle, and the UVA rays pasteurize the water.

These methods may haven’t possibly ticked all boxes to empowered us with every single pollutant-free water but, certainly have proven their mettle for accessing us with clean water from ages. So, it’s a good to have them inhabit when it comes to drinking clean water.
